Improvers Skateboard Tuition

Take skating to the next level. For ages 5 – 12

The improvers class is for young people that already have some experience on a board or have mastered the beginners, and want some assistance taking their skating to the next level.

A safe and friendly intro for ages 5-12

On our hugely popular beginners course we take eager learners through the first steps of skateboarding and help them become comfortable and confident.
We start at the very beginning with standing and moving, staying safe and correct stance.

While the beginners course covers a more limited range, the improvers takes a more individual structure and lets participants learn really anything they want, venturing into the limitless world of skateboarding.

What will we learn?
  • Anything! Skating quickly becomes a very individual activity with people wanting to focus on different tricks and ramps.
  • Coaches will teach tricks that kids want to learn, as well as suggest new tricks based on their ability.
  • We’ll also spend time as a group learning things such as:
    • Improving our Ollies
    • Basic ramp tricks – Rock to fakie, Rock and roll, Axle stalls etc
    • How to skate faster and more comfortably
    • Using bigger ramps and taking tricks to different obstacles
    • How to navigate a busy skatepark, use it safely and be confident skating around others
  • Skaters coming up from the beginners course can practice what they learned and work at doing it independently, as well as moving on to things not covered before.
  • Staff will give more focussed time to individuals and small groups throughout the session.
  • Being in a more free environment skaters can get comfortable being in an open park and learning more about park etiquette.
What we expect
  • We don’t ask for much, just for your child to want to give it a go. Also to understand that this is a group lesson and we are all learning at once, and to listen and follow instructions even if they’ve heard it before or know it already!

If you feel your child may be well on the way to what is mentioned above you may want to consider the improvers, if in doubt give us a shout.

Further Schedule & Booking Details
  • Booking Windows: Courses begin after every school half-term break. Spaces typically open for online booking three weeks beforehand, with upcoming start and release dates always posted on this page.
  • No Waiting Lists: Places are filled strictly on a first-come, first-served basis. We do not accept early bookings or maintain waiting lists.
  • High Demand: Courses sell out quickly. If no spaces are visible online, they are completely sold out. Because each registration must be completed individually, we cannot guarantee you will be able to book for multiple children. We strongly advise against promising lessons to children before a booking is confirmed.
  • Priority Booking: Participants from the previous course receive a one-day priority window via email to rebook. Please whitelist skatepark@brightonyouthcentre.org.uk to ensure you receive this notification.
  • Pre-Filled Spaces: Due to the priority booking system for existing members, some course spaces will already be taken before they go live to the public.
  • Holiday Courses: We occasionally run separate courses during school holidays. These are announced on this page a few weeks in advance.

  • Cancellations (7+ Days Notice): A full refund will be issued if you contact us by phone or email at least 7 days before the course start date.
